We would like to inform you that CO and CR books are currently on hold till 30th June. Dispatch will begin from the first week of July on a first come, first serve basis.

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

DNB preparation is not easy. You are already working in the hospital, attending rounds, managing patients, doing procedures and dealing with a schedule that can change at any time. In between all this, you still have to find time to sit down and prepare for your examination.

And DNB is not an exam where simply reading more books will solve the problem.

You need to know your subject well. You need to understand the clinical side of it. And when the time comes, you should be able to present your answer clearly.

This is where the way you prepare matters.

DNB Theory Result: A Milestone, But Not the End

The DNB Theory result is out, and for many residents, it brings a moment of relief.

If you have cleared it, congratulations. But there is another important part ahead — the DNB Practical examination.

And if you are preparing for the next DNB Theory examination, this is a good time to look at your preparation again.

These things matter because DNB preparation cannot be left entirely for the final few weeks.

Why DNB Preparation Is Different?

By the time you enter postgraduate training, you already know the basics of medicine.

Your problem is usually not, “I have never heard of this topic.”

It is more likely to be:

That is the difference.

DNB preparation requires you to go beyond reading. You need to understand the subject, revise it repeatedly and learn how to use that knowledge when you are questioned.

And you have to do all of this while continuing residency.

Why eConceptual for DNB Preparation?

Learn From People Who Understand Residency

When you are preparing for a postgraduate examination, the teaching needs to make sense in the context of residency. You are not studying as an undergraduate student anymore.

You are seeing patients, attending OPDs, assisting procedures, discussing cases and learning from your seniors every day.

Your preparation should connect with that experience.

At eConceptual, specialty-wise learning is available through:

The idea is simple understand your subject properly instead of trying to remember disconnected facts.

DNB Theory: Don’t Wait for the Last Month

A common mistake is to start serious preparation only when the examination is closed. By then, the syllabus feels huge and every missed topic starts creating pressure. A better approach is to keep moving throughout residency.

This may sound simple, but consistency is often what makes the difference. You don’t need to study for ten hours every day.

Even on busy days, doing something small is better than losing an entire week.

Questions Tell You What You Actually Know

Reading can sometimes give you a false sense of preparation.

You finish a chapter and think, “Yes, I know this.” Then you see a question and suddenly realise that you cannot recall the answer.

That is why question practice matters. A good question should make you stop and think.

It should tell you whether you understood the concept or simply recognised it while reading. More importantly, your mistakes can become revision points.

If you repeatedly get questions from the same area wrong, that is a sign that the topic needs another look.

Mock Tests Are Not Just About the Score

Mock tests are useful because they show you what happens when you have to recall everything under time pressure. You may know the topic but take too long to answer.

You may make silly mistakes. You may spend too much time on one question. Or you may realize that certain topics disappear from your memory when you are under pressure.

These are things you want to discover before the actual examination. So don’t look at a mock test only as a score.

Look at it as feedback.

And Then Comes DNB Practical

Clearing Theory is a big step. But the DNB Practical examination is a different experience.

You have to be ready to discuss cases, present your findings, explain your clinical reasoning and answer questions on the spot. This is where understanding your subject becomes important. You cannot always predict exactly what you will be asked. But if your concepts are strong and you are comfortable discussing your subject, you are in a much better position to handle an unfamiliar question.

So while preparing for Theory, don’t completely disconnect yourself from the clinical side of your specialty.

Your everyday residency experience can actually become part of your preparation.

Preparation That Fits Into Residency

There will be days when you get time to study properly. There will also be days when your duty runs late, and studying is the last thing you want to do.

That’s normal.

Small sessions may not feel much on a single day, but they add up over months.
